NuWa's Abrasion and Hybrid Design

Fabric Developments

by Beth Cochran

Abrasion is a pack and luggage killer, as worn-out, poor quality products populate many warranty rooms at luggage factory warehouses. Turning to chemistry, Nuwa began working with coatings to create a tougher fabric to offer luggage and bag manufacturers.  The process to perfect its new compound, NuHyde™, took nearly a year to develop.  The result is a patent-pending coating that increases the abrasion resistance of its poly/nylon fabric as much as 450%.  When fabric yarns are fused with the NuHyde™ treatment, its high viscosity content creates an additional puncture-resistant barrier on the surface of the fabric without compromising the existing tear and tensile strength of the original fabric.

NuHyde Fabric SwatchBecause of the long compensation cycle for new textile innovations, there is always an inherent risk and substantial investment in offering fabric innovations into the luggage/bag market.  This keeps many manufacturers using the same old range of materials.  However, Nuwa feels that technical fabric innovations like NuHyde™ can translate to a better competitive edge for its customers.

Another example of an advanced development from Nuwa is NuWash™, a proprietary hybrid fiber design in which the fiber itself creates the answer, not the coatings.  NuWash™ offers a unique finish for performance ballistics nylon. This nylon textile development has a striking stonewashed effect achieved by careful intermixing of fibers that react differently to the dyestuffs during the dyeing process.

Developed in heavier weights, the fabric is now available in a full range of 400, 840 and 1680 denier ballistic weaves. Nuwa has engineered this hybrid dying process through its extensive experience in developing more sustainable manufacturing practices. The process is applied using a 95% nylon / 5% synthetic blend. The result is that this unique finish delivers an extremely durable fabric with endless design options for progressive designers and manufacturers using performance ballistic nylon.

Nuwa Textiles, one of the largest weavers in the world, is setting new standards for cleaner textile production.  Nuwa utilizes custom designed machinery to reduce water and factory energy usage, while delivering new eco-friendly fabrics to high-end specialty manufacturers worldwide. The company is the first and only source for this level of environmental action in textile manufacturing while still offering competitive market margins.
